Navigate the Summer BBQ the Healthy Way

Summer is grilling season. Even though there are endless healthy grilling options, you will likely come across a traditional summer barbeque such as a buffet including items like hot dogs and hamburgers.

Try these tips at your next outdoor cookout and you won’t have to worry about sabotaging your healthy eating efforts:

  1. Use a smaller plate. You will eat less and will only have room for what you really want.
  2. Look at all of your options first. Don’t just start loading your plate. Scan the spread before making a final decision on what you will eat.
  3. Find the veggies first. Start by loading your plate with salad and grilled veggies.
  4. Potato or pasta salads are usually loaded with fat and mayonnaise. Instead reach for the salads with mixed leafy greens. The greens will help you fill up faster and you’ll feel better later.
  5. Skip the bun. Opt for toppings that are high in flavor and lower in fat. Load a hamburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and mustard.
  6. Eat the food on your plate slowly and enjoy each bite.

Enjoy your time with friends and family, focusing more on the conversation than the food. Even better, get involved in a game, activity or take a walk to burn off the calories.
