Broccoli’s Benefits in Preventing Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a painful, degenerative joint disease with no current cure or effective treatment other than pain relief or joint replacement. Broccoli is a green vegetable that looks like miniature trees and is stuffed with vitamins A, B, K, C, and nutrients like potassium, zinc and fiber. A recent study shows that broccoli may be able to battle inflammation, which is the root of osteoarthritis.

Preventing osteoarthritis or slowing its progression with changes in lifestyle like diet would be ideal to help people protect their joints into the future and delay or avoid surgery altogether. Broccoli has already been associated with reduced cancer risk, but a newer major study has found a compound in broccoli called sulforaphane that blocks the enzymes, which cause joint destruction in arthritis. This chemical compound is also in Brussels sprouts and cabbage. Current research is underway to see if the initial study that showed reduction in cartilage damage in mice will also benefit humans.
