More Than Sugar To Blame

Back in the day, sugar was the main substance to blame for tooth decay. Now, we know that there are other bad guys to avoid for healthy choppers.

  • Sugary candies that stay in your mouth too long, like lolli-pops, carmels, and other sticky sweets.
  • Starchy foods that linger in the mouth, like soft bread, crackers, pretzels, cereals or potato chips. Bacteria loves to feed on carbs that get stuck between or to the back of teeth.
  • Sports and soft drinks are loaded with sugar and contain citric acids that erode tooth enamel.

These foods don’t need to be eliminated. For instance, carbohydrates are a necessary part of a healthy diet. Instead, try to combine with good foods that neutralize these foods. Keep your teeth clean by brushing them twice a day, floss once a day, consider mouthwashes, and sugar-free gum, and don’t eat after brushing your teeth at bedtime.

Visit your dentist every six months for a check-up. Don’t forget to smile often!
