Nourishing Nuts

Nutcrackers have been a traditional symbol of the holiday season throughout history. The guardian-like nutcrackers displayed as decoration also serve the daunting task of cracking open off-the-charts-great for you nuts!

Eating Nuts Right

In moderation. Nuts are high in fat, but their unsaturated fats are considered, “the good fat”.  Eaten in moderation (approximately 1.5 ounces a day). For example try a small handful as a snack, added to salad, or sprinkled in oatmeal. Their mix of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fiber will help you feel full and may benefit your heart’s health!

Replacing bad fats. Since nuts are high in calories instead of just adding them to your diet, consider swapping them with some of the foods in your diet that are high in saturated fats like meats and cheeses.

The right nuts. Walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, peanuts, pistachio nuts and some pine nuts have the lowest calories per ounce. In a nutshell, eat nuts as a part of a healthy diet!
