Eat To Feel Good

Do you eat differently when you’re nervous or anxious? Sometimes anxiety can do more than just elicit overeating, it changes your appetite so that the foods you crave may be high in sugar, starch or fat. It’s these times when life is difficult or stressful that nutritious foods can actually help you get through the tough situation.

There are foods that can help battle stress, they include:

  • Citrus Fruits - Citrus is high in folic acid, which helps to maintain or increase serotonin levels in the body. Serotonin is a chemical that seems to help keep our moods under control, calm anxiety and relieve depression. Peel an orange for a snack or have a few slices for dessert.
  • Nuts are loaded with vitamin E and vitamin B and may help your body hold up during seriously unpleasant events. Try almonds, pistachios or walnuts added to salads, oatmeal or as a snack.
  • Avocados are full of monounsaturated fats and potassium both can lower blood pressure. Slice on a salad or mash up for guacamole.
  • Oatmeal has carbohydrates that make the brain relaxing chemical serotonin. Fiber in oatmeal helps your body slowly absorb the carbs so the serotonin flows more steadily. Start the day with a hot bowl of good mood to get you started.
  • Spinach contains the mineral magnesium that can help lower your stress level and keep your body in a state of relative ease. Substitute it for lettuce on sandwiches and salads, or sauté with olive oil and garlic.
