What’s The Deal With The Paleo Diet

Retro can be the 'in' thing, but is mimicking the eating pattern of our Stone Age ancestors going too far? The Paleo Diet (or caveman diet as it’s also known) recommends eating as the hunters and gatherers of 'pre-civilization' did. This includes eating mainly meat, fish, fruits and vegetables and avoiding dairy, sugar, salt, grains and legumes. There are positive and negative aspects to this way of eating.

PROS: A diet rich in lean protein and plant foods contain fiber, protein and fluids to satisfy hunger, control blood sugar and prevent weight gain. Whole, unprocessed foods are the basis of most healthy diet recommendations nutrients, such as calcium, magnesium and B vitamins.

CONS: The diet forbids foods like oats, beans and other sources of fiber that help to moderate cholesterol levels and which research supports are part of a well-balanced diet. Restrictive eating with lack of variety and potential nutrient inadequacies make this plan hard to follow.

If the Paleo diet appeals to you, be sure to supplement the plan with calcium and vitamin D.
