Serve Up The Plate

If you were served a plate of pasta would you know if the portion on your plate is one or more servings? Is a bagel one serving or one portion? Usually we eat what is given to us. A portion is just that, the amount of food that is on your plate. The serving size can be very different. Most bagels sold are two servings. Your one portion of pasta may likely be 3 or even 4 servings! One serving of pasta is about a half cup measured. What does that look like on a plate? Want a better way to indicate portion sizes on your plate? Use the new Choose My Plate icon from the USDA, which replaces the old food guide pyramid. Visit www.ChoosemyPlate.gov to avoid oversized portions. Know which foods to increase and which to foods to reduce. It is simple, just make your plate look like my plate.

BELOW ARE SOME TIPS TO EAT LESS AND ENJOY THE FOOD YOU LOVE:

Beware of Large Packages: Ways to control how much food you consume is to portion out food and snacks by serving size.

TV Trap: If snacking while watching TV, put the food into a bowl instead of eating straight from the package.

Power of the Plate: Eat from a smaller plate and be surprised at what you can enjoy in quality instead of quantity.

Sharing Support: Save money and control portions at restaurants by sharing a meal or boxing half up as soon as it comes to the table.

Think Small: Order smaller options - opt for items from the kid’s menu. Picture the ChooseMyPlate icon. Remember that the emphasis is making fruits and vegetables collectively half of your meal.

"It’s so beautifully arranged on the plate - you know someone’s fingers have been all over it."   Julia Childs
