Maybe Not EVERYTHING In Moderation…

We’ve all heard the phrase, “everything in moderation,” but it’s a pretty vague suggestion. For starters, it shouldn’t mean absolutely anything in moderation - there are plenty of foods that you should avoid all together. However, there are others that, in moderation, can be extremely healthy for you.

Red wine. According to The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, a glass or two of wine per day has many benefits, including memory protection against Alzheimer’s Disease, heart health, lower risk of heart disease and stroke, death of cancer cells, and a longer life.

Healthy fats. Unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids are great when consumed in moderation. Although they are still high in calories, foods such as avocado, walnuts, vegetable oils, and fish have excellent health benefits. Eating such foods in low doses can lead to improved cholesterol, reduced risk of diabetes, and decreased inflammation.

Chocolate. Believe it or not, the cocoa bean has a lot going for it. Jam-packed with antioxidants, raw chocolate can do the body a world of good. In its raw state, chocolate is very bitter, however, when purchasing cocoa, opt for as little sugar as possible. Cocoa’s benefits include but are not limited to, protecting nerve cells, and acting as an anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity.

Although some foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed foods, are best when consumed in high doses, the foods above increase their benefits when you decrease consumption. Be sure to track how much you are eating each day so the negative impacts can outweigh the positive.
