What's In the Basket

The tradition of the Easter basket comes from thousands of years ago when ancient cultures celebrated the spring equinox. The rabbit was a sign of fertility and the eggs were mythological symbols for life. The tradition continues today with baskets filled with chocolate bunnies, peanut butter eggs, jelly beans and other sweet treats. Easter is now referred to as a “peak candy holiday”.

Before you start building a candy-free Easter basket consider that evidence shows restriction of desirable foods, may be counterproductive, particularly in children. A healthier strategy may be to build a treat basket that includes some candy and also includes toys and activities such as:

•    Sidewalk chalk

•    Bubbles

•    Spring flowers

•    Decorated hard boiled eggs

•    Carrots

•    Coloring books and craft supplies

•    Lip balm

•    Stickers

•    Card games

•    Jump rope

•    Legos

A colorful and festive Easter basket can be filled with surprises, joy and good health.
